Keith's Story
Keith was born and raised in the Northside of Philadelphia in a single parent home by his mother with his 3 siblings. At an early age he watched his mother suffer from a consequential nervous breakdown. By the time he was ten years of age he transitioned to the District of Columbia area to live with his grandmother. Just like so many of our youth today growing up without a father, he found himself caught up in the allure of the Washington D.C. street life only to become a part of the proverbial statistical category as one of D.C.s trouble youth. After his bouts with the streets and numerous run ins with the law, he was forced to sit down for a while. During that time, he had to deal with the loss of his mother who suffered from years of mental health challenges. This gave him the opportunity to reflect on his life, build his faith, and help others who had found themselves in unfortunate situations. In reflection he wanted to dedicate something in memory of his mother. Having made that change, he wanted to have a positive impact in the community, he went to college and obtained a Masters in Theology.
In 1997, he went on to conduct Non-violent/conflict Resolution workshops. He’s also the co-founder of the Youth Challenge Program. In addition, he has found another way to give back to the community as a certified Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED instructor.
In recognizing an essential need in the community for returning citizens, he also welcomed Veterans and people experiencing homelessness. The program is mainly focused on assisting formerly incarcerated individuals, transition back into the community and become productive members of society.
